There have been more than 200 hat-tricks in the 30-year history of the modern Premier League, but most of them were scored by players in the starting line-up. But there have also been those who have done so from the bench.
One of Tottenham’s leaders, Son Heung-Min, was quiet for a long time after last season’s brilliant display. He was even sent to the bench. But in the match against Leicester, he showed himself in all his glory and scored a hat-trick. He did it when he came on as a substitute and made his name in Premier League history.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has always had a reputation as an outstanding substitute. He came on as a substitute and made the difference, turning the game upside down. Everyone remembers the Champions League final against Bayern. But the Norwegian did the same in the Premier League. Manchester United were 4-1 up when Alex Ferguson brought on Ole in the 72nd minute. And he scored all the remaining goals. Yes, Solskjaer was not only the first to score three goals in the EPL, coming on as a substitute. He scored four goals and remained the only one of his kind.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took to the field in the match against Wolves, celebrating his 32nd birthday. After an hour of play, Claudio Ranieri sent the striker into action at 2-2. In the 77th minute, Hasselbaink gave the Blues the lead. Ten minutes later, he scored a second before netting his third of his four Premier League hat-tricks in added time.
Robert Earnshaw came on as a substitute for Charlton, who outplayed their opponents. Still, the hosts were determined to keep the point alive. That was until Earnshaw shook up the Charlton defence and scored three goals. He scored the last of them from a penalty corner in the 89th minute. Earnshaw is unique in that he has scored a hat-trick in each of the four top divisions of English football. It is unlikely to happen again in the foreseeable future.
In the 2007/08 season, Emmanuel Adebayor had the most prolific campaign of his career, scoring thirty goals in all competitions. A significant contribution was his hat-trick against Derby, who came on as a substitute. Earlier this season, Adebayor helped Arsenal defeat Derby 5-0. He also scored three times in that game, but he was in the starting line-up, so he missed out on two chances to make a list.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game as Manchester United head coach before his retirement was one of the craziest in the Premier League. In it, Lukaku scored the first of three hat-tricks of his EPL career. The Belgian came on at half-time and very quickly scored his first goal. Towards the end of the match, he scored twice more. But West Bromwich managed to get back into the game 2-5. And that game had more to do with West Brom’s save than Lukaku’s hat-trick.
