A-League’s Most Memorable Matches So Far This Season

Optus Stadium, Perth, Australia

Football fans can often overlook Australia’s A-League. Admittedly, it doesn’t quite have the same pulling power that many of Europe’s leagues have, however it should still be able to hold its own against some of the globe’s others.

The league has been improving year-on-year, with better-quality players deciding to take their skills Down Under. We first saw it happen around a decade ago when Alessandro Del Piero switched from Juventus to head to Sydney FC in 2012. It was a surprise then, and while it hasn’t had the same kind of impact that the US’ MLS league has experienced, there has been a splattering of quality players heading to that part of the world to play football.

Just this season, we’ve seen the likes of Douglas Costa and Juan Mata call the A-League their home, following in the footsteps of other renowned players to have done the exact same in the past. Shinji Ono, Besart Berisha, Dwight Yorke, Robbie Fowler, and more are among those to have done so, while many quality Australians have started their careers or returned to end them in the league.

As a result, it has led to some memorable moments and matches to have been played. Indeed, this season has been no different.

What matches have been the most memorable in the 2024/25 A-League season?

The 2024/25 A-League season is still in its infancy, however the 20th edition of the competition hasn’t failed to impress watchers with the action that it has provided thus far.

As of January 20, there have been 85 matches to have been played across the competition, including the fixture between Macarthur and Wellington Phoenix. In those games, a total of 273 goals have been scored, meaning there has been an average of just over three (3.21) being scored in each game. This makes it a competitive league for bettors who enjoy finding the best soccer betting at Unibet Australia available. Whether it be on the over or under goal totals, next goalscorer or anytime goalscorer, the A-League does seem to provide goals without fail.

An example of this was the match between Macarthur and Brisbane Roar on November 30, as defense appeared to go out the window. Both teams went with an attacking approach, leading to a final 4-4 result. A total of 26 shots were had by both teams, with the game back-and-forth throughout. The Roar took a 2-0 lead before Macarthur fought back twice and took a 4-3 lead before Brisbane scored a last-gasp effort to tie the game.

That’s not the only instance whereby several goals have been scored in a game. Earlier that month, fans were able to observe the biggest away win of the season when Perth Glory were battered by Melbourne City 5-0 in their own backyard. They had an even worse time when they were on an away day in October, as they were beaten 6-1 by Macarthur, leading to the biggest home victory in the A-League this season.

Are Macarthur and Perth Glory the teams to watch for memorable matches?

Given how the 2024/25 A-League season has been going so far, some might suggest that Macarthur and Perth Glory are the two teams to watch this season for memorable matches.

Indeed, goals make games memorable, especially when there are many that are being scored in each fixture. Macarthur are one of the most prolific in front of goal, having netted 28 following their 2-1 defeat to the Phoenix. This total ranks them fourth, behind Sydney FC (32 goals scored), Adelaide United (top of the league) and Western Sydney Wanderers (both on 29).

At the other end, goals can be expected to be scored against the Glory this season as they struggle, which may lead to memorable matches for fans. The Glory are second-from-bottom (Brisbane Roar sit bottom) on eight points, having conceded a league-high 35 from their 14 games so far. Just don’t expect the team to find the net for themselves, as they’ve managed just nine – the league’s lowest total by some distance.

Admittedly, matches don’t always become memorable because of the amount fo goals scored. Player performances can make them memorable. However, football fans can often remember scorelines more easily, and then associate them with what happens on the pitch, thus sticking in their minds for longer.
