The administration of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced the extension of the five-substitution rule, according to the organization’s official website.
The decision was approved after detailed consultation with different experts such as coaches, medical concussion experts, team doctors, competition organizers, player representatives, key stakeholders, etc.
The rule of up to five substitutes in top-level and domestic competitions will act until the end of 2021 and for international matches until July 31, 2022.
Additionally, at a videoconference meeting of the IFAB, the administration decided to start testing additional substitutions in case of suspected injury of players. Testing will launch in January 2021.
A reminder that the rule of five substitutions was launched in May of this year to help clubs dealing with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
