Manchester City is crowned the Premier League’s top table for the fourth consecutive season.
Manchester City won the Premier League title in the most dramatic extraordinary circumstances. They came back from two goals down and beat Aston Villa by a score of 3-2 at Etihad Stadium.
Man City overcame a two-goal deficit and won another league title. It also held off Liverpool on the last day of the season. After falling behind Villa 2-0, it seemed like City would lose the title. But everything changed when Ilkay Gündogan scored in the final minute. Rodri equalized two minutes later before Gundogan scored his second goal: the title-clincher.
Man City had opened the door for the Reds last weekend by drawing West Ham and dropping two crucial points. Jurgen Klopp’s team won at Southampton on Tuesday with a win with a heavily-rotated squad. They finish second in the table for the fourth season, one point behind first.
This result ends Liverpool’s search for what would be a historic quadruple. The club has already won the League Cup Cup and FA Cup titles (beating Chelsea with penalty shootouts) while progressing to the Champions League final. Real Madrid will take on Liverpool for the European title in Paris on May 28.
Man City could trade places with Liverpool, given its insatiable search to be European champion. But it will settle for an English title. It is the sixth title in the Premier League era and eighth overall. This tie breaks with Aston Villa’s fourth-most historical titles. This number could overgrow, with Erling Hailand expected to join next season after a Borussia Dortmund transfer.
However, this season’s success was not achieved without a star striker. Man City did not replace Sergio Aguero, and its attempts to sign Harry Kane, a Tottenham striker, failed. Pep Guardiola’s team still scored a league record of 99 goals. They were led by Kevin De Bruyne (15), Raheem Sterling (13), and Riyad Maharez (11). Bernardo Silva (8), Gabriel Jesus (nine), and Phil Foden (9 each) were also key contributors. However, half of Jesus’s goals came in a victory over Watford.
De Bruyne and the Brazilian were linked to an Arsenal exit. The Brazilian tied for eighth in assists. Jack Grealish (PS100 million man) was City’s most notable summer signing. The club scored just three goals in league play. However, one of those goals was a huge one and helped to spark the comeback from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham to save the point that would have put the club in a position to win Tuesday.
Manchester City was beaten only three times in league play. It lost twice to Tottenham, the first in the season, and once to Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace also held City to a draw in their other meeting. However, the club won points over every other league team and had a 12-match winning streak which helped it maintain its position at the top of the table.
Liverpool managed to overcome a double-digit point deficit to take the top spot provisionally. However, as it has done with City during its time under Guardiola, it found a way to win the title.
