Villarreal beat Manchester United in a penalty shootout to win the Europa League

Villarreal defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final. The meeting took place at the Energa Gdansk Stadium in Gdansk and ended with a 1-1 (11-10 in the penalty shootout).

Villarreal forward Gerard Moreno opened the scoring. On 30 minutes, after a free-kick, Moreno headed the ball into the net. Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani scored early in the second half. Cavani converted following a cross from a corner kick. The ball bounced back to the Uruguayan after a series of ricochets.

In extra time the teams failed to score. Villarreal players were stronger in the penalty shootout – 11:10. Man United goalkeeper David De Gea missed the decisive penalty goal.
The encounter was officiated by a team of French referees headed by Clément Turpin. The assistants were Nicolas Dano and Cyril Gringor. The reserve referee was Slavko Vincic.

Manchester United Highlights

In the tournament’s semi-finals, Villarreal beat Arsenal from London on aggregate (2-1, 0-0), and Manchester United beat Roma 6-2, 2-3. Villarreal won the Europa League for the first time in history.
